What to Get Mom for Mother's Day

Mother's Day is a week away, and if your mom is like mine, she has everything she could possibly want or need. And its challenging to get her something could really make use of. Ever year, I sit and think about what's going on in my mom's life during Mother's Day and what she would be grateful to receive. Think about what's going at her work, what she's doing at home, her passions, and any new projects she's undertaking. I know my mom has been really busy lately so she could use a massage, facial, or pedicure gift certificate. She LOVES chocolate, and never turns down a Godiva bar. She also loves to garden (in my opinion she has the best garden on the block) and Target has miniature grow kits for basil, oregano, and peppers that are only $1. Here are some ideas for your:

Jewels: 50 Phenomenal Black Women over 50 is a great book with photos and essays from 50 black women over 50. The photos were taken by Micheal Cummingham and interviews were conducted by New York Times bestselling author Connie Brisco (love her book P.G. county!). This is a great coffee table book for your mom. Get it at Amazon or Borders

What mom doesn't love candles? And it seems like every mom's house smells so good. Get her a few scented candles for the kitchen, bedroom, and bathroom

Pier 1 Imports, Hat Box Candles; $12
Comes in blueberry, spiced pear, blue sea, and spring gardenia; the fragrances are wonderful!

A GPS is great for moms that get lost easily (like my mom) when navigating a city. If she's not electronic savvy, take a drive with her the first time to show how a GPS works.

Target, Red TomTom ONE; $146

Get one of her favorite pictures enlarged and put it in a personalized photo frame. If your mom has old pictures in an album, look for one of you and her when you were little, she'll love it. Kodak.com and Shutterfly are also having good Mother's Day specials

Things Remembered, 8 x 10 Symphony Frame, $24.99
Great frames are always on clearance here, so don't let the sales person try to get you to buy their "exclusive" Mother's Day frames

Get her tickets to a Broadway show, dance performance, play, or a concert to see her favorite artist. I've heard rave reviews about The Color Purple and it's on national tour now. Get tickets for the both of you and tell her you're dressing up when you see the show.

Still need more ideas:

* Treat her to dinner at her favorite restaurant and tell her to get dessert too
* Cook her favorite meal and have a dinner for just you two
* Spend a day at the Spa with her
* Get her something in her wardrobe that needs an update like a new trench coat,
black cardigan, or wallet
