It must be the Obama Effect

I watched CNN's Black in America 2 last night and was genuinely surprised about how positive the program was. If you remember last year's documentary, it focused on the aspects of the black community that mainstream media sees far too often. We saw mothers on welfare, kids in poor neighborhoods, and deadbeat dads. But this year we saw kids in poor neighborhoods travel to South Africa to help those that are less fortunate than them, a charter school that sends 100% of its students to college, and a glimpse into the world of black elitist. People use the concept of the "Oprah Effect" the explain her show's influence on businesses and people featured on her show, but I think the "Obama Effect" has an effect on how mainstream media portrays African-Americans. Don't get me wrong, the media still has a a very long way to go, but I am seeing slight changes. Desiree Rogers on the cover of The Wall Street Journal magazine, more news stories about the positive effects Obama's presence is having on young men, and charities featuring commercials with African-American athletes making differences in their community. The Obama family has only been in the White House for 6 months, so it will be interesting to see if the trend of positive images increases during his term. I hope it does because we're a people of so much more than shooting hoops and entertainment; we're leaders, pioneers, and change-makers.

Inside the Obama White House

Did you watch Inside the Obama White House last night on NBC? I never knew this was an NBC tradition and this is the first time I've seen a special like this. Brian Williams literally spent the entire day with President Obama and observed the ins and outs of a president's job. And of course they had to spend time with the First Lady, Michelle Obama. I was truly amazed to see how young and vibrant the West Wing staff is and how much fun working at the White House must be. Make sure to check it out tonight at 9 PM eastern on NBC.

Michelle Obama's commencement speech: Unbelievably Inspiring

Michelle Obama gave the commencement speech at University of California-Merced. This speech was so powerful, it bordered on the line of a sermon. She has really been focusing on the call for America's recent college graduates to serve and make a difference in their communities. The highlight of the speech comes when she reminds us young (but sometimes stubborn and hard-headed) people about all those in our lives that have sacrificed to help us get to where we are today. Yes, Mrs. Obama, we are truly blessed.

Guess Who Made Maxim Magazine's Hot 100?

The annual "Hot 100" list was released last week and our very own First Lady, Michelle Obama made the list. She better do it! She came in at #93 and its the first time a First Lady has made the list. The magazine named her the "hottest First Lady in the history of the United States." Nice how they used her Official White House photo in Maxim, I'm sure that's a first too.

White House Correspondent's Dinner

The White House Correspondent's Dinner was this past Saturday. The dinner is basically a big party for members of the media that work for newspapers, magazines, radio, television, or other forms of media and regularly report about the White House. The Who's Who of the political, journalism, and celebrity world all come out to celebrate the White House Correspondent Assocation. But becoming a member of the WHCA isn't as easy as it sounds, you definitely have to apply and be accepted. Perhaps I'll get an invite to this dinner one day; I would love it.

Wanda Skyes was HILARIOUS!

Michelle's 1st 100 days: Community involvement

Lots of newspapers and magazines are talking about Michelle Obama's first 100 days as First Lady. Many are focusing on the inspiration she has provided to women around the world, the historical impact of her reign as First Lady, or how wonderful she has dressed and looked. All the reasons are significant and completely valid, but I want to focus on what she has done in community service. And how her actions have basically made the White House, the People's House.

Even before she was officially First Lady, she was serving military families meals at "Operation Gratitude" on MLK Day of Service

She invited 6th and 7th graders from a DC school to perform in the White House during Black History Month

Serving meals at Miriam's Kitchen

Helping YouthBuild Americorp put the finishing touches on their energy-efficient home construction project

The White House Garden, she decided to start the garden and work with a class of 5th graders to show them the importance of healthy eating.

Michelle Obama in London, London, Lon-don

Barack and Michelle have taken London by storm during their visit fro the G20 summit. And Michelle has looked absolutely stunning at every event; her choices in clothing have been flawless. I still can't believe that she doesn't have a stylist! There are celebrities that pay good money for people to dress them and they look no where as put together as her. She knows her body well and what styles and colors work best for her shape; notice she usually flaunts her arms or legs. Her look for their London arrival was the perfect spring ensemble. Wearing bright feminine materials with dark leather accessories is definitely an effortlessly chic look for this season. Michelle is wearing a Jason Wu dress, Michael Kors cardigan, and that signature belt. This is very easy to duplicate; hopefully you already have the cardigan and belt in your closet, so just go out and get yourself a bright dress. Here's a possible option:

Once again, Barack and Michelle are taking the president and first lady role to a new level. For the first time ever, tickets for the White House Easter Egg Roll festivities will be available online. More people have a chance to get tickets and celebrate Easter on the White House's south lawn! The distribution starts this Thursday March, 26th and is open to children 10 and under (each child can be accompanied by two adults). This is a great event to take your little to if you have a Little Brother or Sister from Big Brothers Big Sisters of America or if you have younger siblings or cousins or nieces or nephews. Come on, it's Easter at the White House with Barack and Michelle, you have to exercise all your options to possibly get in. More details here: http://www.whitehouse.gov/eastereggroll/
